Beyond Touch

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

We are in the midst of a pandemic. This event has taught us one thing, be careful of what you touch. Avoid touching anything unnecessarily. Essentially, touching something may decide whether a person will die or live.

Turns out, the most widely used device of all time relies entirely on, touch. On average, a person touches his/her phone 2600 times. Also between these phone touches, the person may touch something else too. That results in transmission of microbes from various surfaces to our phone. Research has shown that the average touchscreen phone is as dirty as a toilet seat!

That is why we need to think beyond touch. Also, touchscreens have been around for the past decade. So i guess its time for an upgrade in the way we interact with smartphones.

One way is to use a sensor which will consider a touch, when the finger is pointing at a particular point, but is atleast 1 cm away from the screen. That may reduce touching to some extent, but we'll still be touching the phone from the back.

Another way is to use eye tracking, kinda like Jarvis in the Iron Man suit. That may be the ultimate solution. But today it does not seem like a reality. Also who knows what impact such tech would do to our eyes.

For now, all we can do is, clean our smartphones regularly. Sadly, that's the best solution that we have today...
