The Pop-Up Camera

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

Everybody has been trying to make a phone with a full screen display. But the front camera always came in the way. One of the true implementations of a full scale display is the use of the pop-up camera. This concept was first introduced by Vivo Nex in 2018.

Initially it was heavily criticised by critics saying that moving parts are dangerous for smartphones and it my get easily damaged and so on. The company repeatedly stated that the mechanism is durable for daily usage.

As time has passed, we have realised that the pop-up camera is not as bad as it was reported initially. Many big manufacturers have started implementing it to achieve the awesome full screen display. Notably OnePlus with the 7 pro and the 7T pro.

OnePlus implementing this technology was a big thing, since before that, OnePlus never did anything out of the box with their phones. Their phones seemed to go the safe way with bigger companies like Apple and Samsung spending the time and effort in R&D and OnePlus mirroring tech from them.

Today, we have various phones in differing price points having pop-up cameras. Even the Realme XT has it, and it only costs around ₹15000 ($200)

In a way, Vivo has done an Apple-esque job with the pop-up camera. Commendable ! 🙌
